pd|hub Coalition of Higher Ed Orgs

The pd|hub Coalition of Higher Education Organizations is committed to advancing career and professional development as core components of predoctoral and postdoctoral training. Coalition members are national organizations whose missions include improving the educational experience of doctoral students and/or postdoctoral scholars and that have a commitment to supporting the diverse career pathways available to PhD graduates. Coalition members meet quarterly to leverage collective efforts while working toward shared goals.

 

 

American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) Graduate Research, Education and Training (GREAT) Group

The AAMC is a not-for-profit association dedicated to transforming health care through innovative medical education, cutting-edge patient care, and groundbreaking medical research. The AAMC Group on Graduate Research, Education, and Training (GREAT) is a professional development group for leaders of PhD, MD-PhD, and postdoctoral education.
 

 
Association of American Universities (AAU)
The AAU PhD Education Initiative aims to change the culture surrounding doctoral education at AAU member institutions so that graduate education is more student-centered, placing greater emphasis and focus on students as individuals with diverse educational and professional interests, needs, and challenges. The Initiative’s objective is to make the full range of PhD career pathways visible, valued, and viable for all students.

Council of Graduate Schools (CGS)

Representing universities that grant the vast majority of research doctorates in the U.S., the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS) has a long history of pursuing research and action initiatives to support PhD education. These include projects on degree competitiondiversity and inclusionprofessional developmentthe dissertationPreparing Future Faculty, and most recently, PhD Career Pathways, in which 70 doctoral universities are working to improve PhD education across all broad fields of study through a data-informed approach.

Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL)

The Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL) seeks to enhance undergraduate STEM learning by developing future faculty members. CIRTL has current projects funded by NSF AGEP, INCLUDES, and IUSE to increase STEM PhDs’ engagement with evidence-based teaching and learning strategies, and to develop a more inclusive and diverse STEM faculty. 
 

Graduate Career Consortium (GCC)

The Graduate Career Consortium (GCC) is an international professional organization comprised of over 400 members advancing graduate students and postdoctoral scholars’ professional and career development. Ongoing initiatives of the GCC include the weekly column, Carpe Careers, in Inside Higher Ed; ImaginePhD, a free online career exploration and planning tool for PhD students and postdocs, and the annual pre-conference training for new professionals and annual meeting for all members. 

 

National Association of Graduate and Professional Students (NAGPS)

The National Association of Graduate-Professional Students (NAGPS) is the largest student-run organization advocating for graduate students across the country. The NAGPS regularly conducts its annual Leadership Academy, a targeted leadership development program for graduate and professional students. Moreover, NAGPS offers bi-annual training & hands-on experience during the Advocacy Summit & Legislative Action Days in the District of Columbia, which allows students to explore their career options in the field of policy and advocacy in government agencies or in the Congress.
 
 

National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) Board on Higher Education and Workforce (BHEW)

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) is a private nonprofit institution that provides expert advice on challenges facing the nation and world. The Board on Higher Education and Workforce (BHEW) released a 2018 report on Graduate STEM Education for the 21st Century and a 2019 report on The Science of Effective Mentorship in STEMM, and has an ongoing study on Supporting the Whole Student: Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and Well-Being in Higher Education
 
 

National Postdoctoral Association (NPA)

The National Postdoctoral Association (NPA) is committed to improving the postdoctoral experience by supporting a culture of enhanced professional growth where all postdocs are empowered, valued, and supported. At the individual, organizational, and national levels, the NPA facilitates connections, raises awareness, and collaborates with stakeholders in the postdoctoral community. 

 

Student Advocates for Graduate Education (SAGE)

Student Advocates for Graduate Education (SAGE) is an advocacy body focusing on national issues affecting graduate and professional students at R1 universities. SAGE advocates for legislation at the federal level to improve the financial, academic, and physical welfare of graduate students. SAGE also advocates for best practices across our coalition member schools. SAGE gathers information from members to identify strengths and weakness for issues of cost of living, healthcare, labor compensation, and more, using that data to advocate at members' individual institutions.
